Memory and Place
Memory is not a transparent or direct reflection of the past but rather a constructed space, where certain elements are veiled or distorted by other psychological forces. Altered Interiors, is a physical reconstruction of memory. The use of cardboard and collage allowed for layered storytelling. The materials are impermanent, worn and deteriorating, much like memory. As an installation, it quite literally creates space and place and references Bachelard’s Poetics of Space that posited that the House could be used to analyze the human soul. Considering concepts of domesticity and notions of home, the piece also incorporates ideas of interior versus exterior spaces. The father figure is set apart from other family members, existing outside of neighboring rooms. The built screen door places the piece in the South, where porches and screen doors are so pervasive. It is a juxtaposition of collage and architectural elements to construct a sense of place that is real, remembered and imagined.
